Regular Meeting Minutes

Attendance

Commissioners Bayard, Todd, Jorgensen, Benson, Wilkerson, Jackson, Young (Council liaison), Seltzer (Staff liaison)

Absent

Approval of minutes

Minutes of March 17 were approved. Bayard motion, Wilkerson second.

Call to Order

Todd called the meeting to order at 8:20 a.m.

Old Business

  • Bayard, Wilkerson and Benson gave a brief report on the presentation of the PAC to the City Council at the April 7 study session.
  • Bayard briefed the commission on his report to the Parks and Recreation Commission regarding the PAC work on placing public art in the Calle.

New Business

  • Todd appointed commissioners to the following subcommittees:

Funding: Todd (chair), Benson, Bayard, Jackson

Calle: Bayard (chair), Young, Wilkerson

Policy/Procedures: Bayard (chair), Todd

McGee memorial: Jorgensen (chair), Bayard, Young

Gateway: Wilkerson (chair), Longshore, Jackson

Neighborhood/Community Benson (chair), Longshore, Young

Todd explained that the new subcommittee, Neighborhood/Community would focus on placing public art in Ashland neighborhoods, identify possible locations and generate interest and involvement from the neighborhood residents.

  • Calle Report

Benson gave an update on the Calle project. There was some discussion as to how to proceed with fund raising: whether to focus on raising funds for a specific project such as the Calle overlook or for a general fund for all public art.

Young clarified that the Lithia Artisans Guild has contributed $13,000 towards the restoration of the Calle and has earmarked $3,000 for public art in the Calle.

The commission discussed the importance of establishing a timeline to include, construction, fundraising efforts, call for artists and more. This will be covered by the Calle subcommittee. Bayard expressed interest in involving the public art study group in the fund raising efforts.

Other

  • Todd, Jackson, Seltzer will meet with new members Young and Longshore to discuss the commission and provide an overview of the ongoing work of the commission.

Action

  • Seltzer to write letter of introduction to the Director of Cultura in Guanjuato about the Calle project and arrange to meet with him if he plans to be in Ashland during July 4 weekend.
