Review of Public Input
PAC discussed the First Friday event and commented that they lost track of the number of attendees after counting 167.  Of the attendees, 78 provided their written comments.

Newman reported that a professional typographer made a comment about the lower case ‘a’ being larger than the upper case ‘L’.  Warren commented that he is also a professional typographer and used a format to determine the size of the letters.  The letters A and D at the beginning of the word are large then working across the line the pattern is big, little, big, little, big, little big. If the small ‘a’ is made smaller it will be out of sync with the patterns and look odd.

Another comment asked about securing the letters to the pedestal.  Warren explained they will be bolted on and it will be very difficult for someone to remove them.  Another comment asked about lighting the signs.  Lighting is not in the budget for this project, though the Council could allocate additional funds if it chooses.

The committee discussed the form and shape of the pedestal and agree that the curved form is the most appealing and interesting.  In addition they asked Warren to add a mountain silhouette to the top of the Exit 14 sign.

He also explained that three sheets of steel will be used to form the base and the mountains with about 6” of space between which will create the depth to the sign.  The steel will look textured but be smooth and will be coated with anti-graffiti clear coat.

The group discussed the color of the steel for the mountains.  Warren explained that he wants the mountains to be a lighter shade of the same color as the pedestal base to create a contrast but won’t know how much lighter until he works with the steel during fabrication.

Motion by Friend: Move to recommend to the City Council entry signs with the curved pedestal base with the three-layer mountain silhouette on the north and south entrance and a single layer silhouette on the Exit 14 sign.  Seconded by Merchant.

The PAC voted unanimously in favor of the motion.

There was a brief discussion about the presentation to Council.  Seltzer will prepare the staff report/council communication, Garrington will provide a brief oral presentation describing the process and Warren will present the proposed signs and describe his process.
