ASHLAND CONSERVATION COMMISSION
MINUTES
6 p.m. – July 22, 2009
Community Development Center

CALL TO ORDER
Chairperson Finney called the meeting to order at 6:03 pm.
Attendees:Risa Buck, Russ Chapman, Stuart Corns, Ross Finney, Jim Hartman, Jim McGinnis and David Runkel were present.
Shelley Lotz, was not present, excused.

City Council Liaison and Chair: Kate Jackson
Staff Representative: Robbin Pearce

APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Chairperson Finney asked for approval of the minutes for June 24, 2009.

Commissioner Buck moved to approve the minutes for June 24, 2009 and Commissioner Chapman seconded the motion.
Voice Vote: All Ayes. The motion passed with a unanimous vote.
 
PUBLIC FORUM
No one present to speak.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
Next Meeting- August 26, 2009

Commissioner McGinnis will not be able to attend the next meeting.

Chairperson Finney announced a seminar by Solar Oregon, August 22 and 23rd, “Learn How to Go Solar”.

Commission McGinnis announced a training session in August for Transition Town will be in Ashland, with a cost of $200.00.

Commissioner Buck announced Standing Stone’s new marketing phrase “Tap Into Ashland”.
 
SPECIAL PRESENTATION
Counselor Jackson presented a PowerPoint presentation regarding the Council Goals and Visions. The purpose of the presentation is to make the Commission aware about the written statements (goals), value and vision statements and also to provide an opportunity for the Commission to give input and comments.

Chairperson Finney encouraged the subcommittees to discuss and make recommendations/suggestions for the Counsel during the month of August. At the next Commission meeting, it can then be determined if more time is needed in September for the Commission to respond to the Counsel’s request for feedback.

Commissioner McGinnis gave a brief summary of their meeting, stating that their primary focus will be to focus on the Counsel goals. Commissioner McGinnis wants to see if the City would adopt the Natural Step process. They are going to request a report from all Departments/Commissions regarding what their focus is for sustainability. Also, they have been doing research on conducting sustainability surveys and get baseline data.

Croman Advisory Committee
Commissioner Chapman gave an update to the continuous discussions regarding planning and sustainability with the new project. The Commission members discussed different aspects of the project including open space, parking, residential, business and plan usage. Their next meeting will be August 12 and Commissioner Chapman will be happy to present any concerns or comments from other Commissioners.

Commissioner Buck updated the Commission for the month.

Compost Classes-Thanked all the Commissioners who participate with supporting
the classes. Commissioner McGinnis reported how well the last class went. The members spoke briefly about composting food scraps.
