Purchase Permits Online

Contractors doing work in the City of Ashland can obtain non-plan review, residential electrical, plumbing, and mechanical permits online using the State's ePermitting website. Click Here to apply for an online permit.

Plan Submittals

Plans are taken in at the Community Development front counter between 8:00 AM - 3:30 PM Monday through Friday. The plans are reviewed at the front counter by one of the building inspectors on staff using either a residential checklist or a commercial checklist to determine that the minimum required information is provided. The plan review process involves a review by the Planning Division for land use approval, the Public Works/Engineering Division for any work relating to the public right-of-way, and the Fire Department for issues relating to potential access and hydrant location and flow concerns.

Residential plans are typically reviewed by all Departments within 3 to 4 weeks from the date of submittal. Depending on the complexity of the project and the completeness of plans, commercial reviews take roughly 4 to 8 weeks from submittal through fee calculation.

Over-the-Counter Permits

The Ashland Planning and Building Divisions have a residential "over the counter" permit day each Thursday morning between 8:30 AM and 11:30 AM. This permit process is intended to allow applicants to speak directly with both a Building Division Plan Review Specialist and a City Planner, if necessary, and issue permits for small projects without a submittal, review, and issue process that is required for larger projects. Click Here for an information sheet on the Over the Counter Permit Process.
