Fire Danger Increases to HIGH on June 28th, Are You Ready to Evacuate?

The fire danger level in the City of Ashland will increase to “high” (yellow) on June 28th at 12:01 a.m. During this time of year, flying embers from a wildfire can ignite homes and vegetation and may cause evacuations. If you see smoke, please call 911.

Is your home and landscape ready for a fire? Are YOU prepared to evacuate with little notice?

Here’s what to do today to get ready for wildfire:

  • CLEAN all debris from your roof and gutter. If you can’t do this safely, hire someone.
  • RAKE away leaves, needles and all bark mulch within 5 feet from your foundation and siding.
  • MAKE your address clearly visible to first responders.
  • Remove flammable branches, wood and dense flammable vegetation from your property, starting close to your home and working your way out.

Are you ready to evacuate your home today? You may have hours to evacuate or only minutes to flee. Complete these four high-priority items NOW to prepare to evacuate:

  • Know Your Alerts – sign up for Nixle, Ashland’s alert system, by texting 97520 to 888777 as the recipient or go to ashland.or.us/nixle to sign up with email or an unlisted landline. 1700 AM radio is another source of information. Check that your radio can tune to 1700 AM in Ashland.
  • Know Your Zone – Ashland has TEN evacuation zones. Officials will advise which zones need to evacuate using Nixle. Visit ashland.or.us/evacuate and click Know Your Zone for interactive and printable zone maps.
  • Get Ready – make a Go Kit, have valuable papers and items ready, make a checklist, and practice leaving via all routes out of your zone.
  • Stay Together – It’s vital to only take one (1) vehicle in an evacuation to minimize evacuation gridlock. Keep the gas tank in this vehicle full.
