April: Harden Your Home

We’ve seen up-close the devastation that wildfire can bring to our communities. It is our collective action now that can prevent the next fire from destroying our precious community. Join us and your neighbors to prepare for the upcoming wildfire season by following the four-month campaign sponsored by Ashland Fire & Rescue and the City’s Wildfire Safety Commission. We will be sending messages each month with a theme to help you save your home from wildfire and get ready for evacuation and smoke.

April’s theme is hardening your home against wildfire. Hardening your home to stop embers and small flames can keep your home from igniting and stop fire from spreading home to home as it did during the Almeda Fire. We all need to take responsibility for our homes and lots to make our homes ember-proof. Many items are easy, inexpensive, and achievable. We can do this! This April, do the following:

Apply to receive a green debris bin for your neighborhood: Does your neighborhood have flammable vegetation growing close to homes? Get together with your block or your neighborhood to apply for a green debris bin! 20 bins are available to fill up with cuttings of flammable vegetation like juniper, arborvitae and mugo pine. Apply by April 14th at fireadaptedashland.org/wildfireprep and clicking on “Apply to get a Green Debris Bin”.

Get trained to conduct wildfire risk assessments: If you are an Ashland resident and are interested in volunteering to help neighbors in your community understand their wildfire risk, apply to attend Ashland Fire & Rescue’s Wildfire Risk Assessor Program training. Learn more about the program expectation and sign up by visiting ashland.or.us/wrap. Sign up by April 23rd.

Gather your green debris for Ashland’s 10th Annual Green Debris Drop Off Day, May 2nd! Load your vehicle with flammable yard debris and drop it off for free at Valley View Transfer Station on Sunday, May 2nd. The Transfer Station will be open from 8:30AM - 3:30PM to collect your flammable green debris like branches, leaves, needles, juniper, arborvitae, and mugo pine. This event is available to Ashland residents only, so be prepared to show proof of Ashland residence upon arrival. Visit ashland.or.us/greendebris for details about the event.

Information about the Wildfire Preparedness Campaign can be found at fireadaptedashland.org/wildfireprep and will also be on display at local stores and the Tuesday Farmer’s Market in Ashland.
