Controlled Burn Continues Tuesday, January 28th for upper Tolman Creek Road and USFS 2080 Road

Burn crews will be working on the 2000 block of upper Tolman Creek Road today for community wildfire safety. This controlled burn is critical due to the close proximity to town and neighborhoods.

Further up Tolman Creek Road on the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, AFR partners plan to burn large piles along the USFS 2080 Road. Crews will utilize a tracked UTV to travel over the snow for access.

Potential Smoke Impact
Smoke will be visible from many parts of town and residents in the Green Meadows and upper Tolman Creek Road neighborhoods may smell smoke.
No roads or trails will be closed on public lands, however, some smoke impacts could occur around the upper reaches of the Tolman Creek area. Smoke sensitive people should avoid the area, or if you live close by, close windows.

Why We Conduct Burns
A recent article in the Ashland Daily Tidings explains more about why we use controlled burns. See 'Fighting Fire with Fire' for details.

Conditions for burning are good with a weather system that will move smoke away from town.  Controlled burns are a critical part of creating a safer, more resilient landscape and community in the face of increasing fire risk due to climate change and overgrown forests.
