Field Trip Information

The North Mountain Park Nature Center, part of APRC, has helped to develop a new geology program in conjunction with the new Geology Park in Ashland. There are three versions of the program: one geared for upper elementary, one for middle school, and one for high school students; offered at no charge.

Activity Sheets for Kids (PDF format)
Each program, offered during the fall and spring, begins with a classroom visit by a trained docent which takes about an hour. The docent explains concepts (such as geologic time, fossils, use of a scale bar, estimating ages, etc.,) that students will need to understand for the second part of the program, the field trip to the park. At the park, students spend about an hour and a half completing activity sheets using information they discover on their own. Activity sheets are built to several levels of difficulty, so that all abilities in a class will be challenged. In addition to the activity sheets, each participating teacher receives a comprehensive teacher's guide.

The Geology Park was built as a joint venture between Ashland Parks & Recreation Commission, the Ashland School District, and local volunteers. It contains three ‘time walks’, along which visitors discover local geology and how life and earth have changed through time. Over two hundred hand-made tiles depict life forms characteristic of past ages, plate tectonic maps, the times of ice ages and mass extinctions, and local geologic events, as well as the ages and names of geologic periods. Landscaping reflects the evolution of plant life though time. High quality interpretive signs guide visitors through the ‘time walks’ and provide focus on local geologic events, mass extinctions, plate tectonics, and evolution.

Currently, there is no cost for theses programs which are presented during the spring and fall based on the availability of the docents. Please contact Libby VanWyhe at North Mountain Park by email or call 541.488.6606 to find out more or to arrange a program.
