National Trust for Historic Preservation

National Park Service, Historic Resource Section
America's cultural resources - buildings, landscapes, archeological sites, ethnographic resources, objects and documents, structures and districts - embody a rich heritage of human experiences and cultural identities. They provide information about people from the past and establish important connections to the present. They tell a compelling story of our earlier nations, states, and communities and help us understand how we got where we are today. America's cultural resources also provide evidence about important historical trends and events, reflect people's everyday lives and significant accomplishments, and illustrate distinctive architectural, landscape, and engineering designs.
Southern Oregon Historical Society
The Southern Oregon Historical Society was formally organized in 1946 by a group of Jackson County residents interested in saving the 1883 Jackson County Courthouse and preserving the legacy of the early settlers. The Society's hope was to gather local historical materials and preserve historical objects, buildings and sites. From these early beginnings, the Society has grown into one of the finest regional historical societies in the Pacific Northwest.
Oregon Historical Society
Shortly after its formation, the Society opened its first office and museum in Portland City Hall and began the development of a regional research library and a collection of historical artifacts. In 1917 the Society moved into Portland’s Public Auditorium (now Keller Auditorium), and in 1966 moved to its current location at the corner of SW Jefferson and Park in downtown Portland.
State Historic Preservation Office
State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs) are an integral part of a national preservation partnership led by the National Park Service (NPS). Under terms of the National Historic Preservation Act the states and participating tribes are delegated certain powers and duties by the NPS, along with annual apportionment to carry them out. The partnership is further extended to local governments through the Certified Local Government (CLG) program.
Secretary of the Interior Rehabilitation Standards
The Secretary of the Interior is responsible for establishing standards for all programs under Departmental authority and for advising Federal agencies on the preservation of historic properties listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places.
Oregon Cultural Trust
Supporting Oregon's culture makes practical sense. As an investment, it creates vibrant communities by strengthening the economy, improving education, and bettering our quality of life. While these are potent arguments for investing in culture, the moral imperative is greater still: We owe it to ourselves, to our ancestors and to our children, to strengthen and preserve that which defines who we are and provides us with a sense of place.

The Applegate Trail
1996 marked the 150 th anniversary of the Applegate Trail, the southern route of the Oregon Trail. It was blazed in 1846 as an alternate, and hopefully safer route to Oregon. Three brothers, Lindsay, Jesse, and Charles Applegate and their extended families came to Oregon on the original Oregon Trail during the first major migration in 1843.
Historic Roads
Across the United States historic roads are being lost through demolition, neglect and poor management. Sometimes this is due to policy, sometimes external pressures and sometimes simply ignorance. These losses can be swift and devastating or slow and incremental—hardly noticed until it is too late. It is important to recognize and preserve historic roads. One need only consider the lost resources of earlier transportation eras now lamented.
Oregon Historical County Records Guide
The guide contains a comprehensive descriptive inventory of selected records for each of Oregon's 36 counties. The major features include: records inventory, individual county histories, scenic county images, county context, Oregon maps and inventory background.
Save America's Treasures
Save America’s Treasures is a national effort to protect "America's threatened cultural treasures, including historic structures, collections, works of art, maps and journals that document and illuminate the history and culture of the United States." Established by Executive Order in February 1998, Save America's Treasures was originally founded as the centerpiece of the White House National Millennium Commemoration and as a public-private partnership that included the White House, the National Park Service and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Dedicated to the preservation and celebration of America's priceless historic legacy, Save Americas Treasures works to recognize and rescue the enduring symbols of American tradition that define us as a nation.
