Opportunity to participate on a Selection Panel needed for Marking Ashland Places a public art project in the Nationally Registered Historic Railroad District

MARKING ASHLAND PLACES - a collaborative public art project

The Public Arts and Historic Commissions are collaborating on an historic marker and wayfinding project to provide a connection to the history of Ashland on today’s landscape. Marking Ashland Places (MAP), will create a sense of place and pride by establishing distinctive landmarks within each of the City’s four Nationally Registered Historic Districts as well as serve to promote historic and heritage tourism to the City.

The vision for the MAP project is to create a Hub Site in each of Ashland’s four Historic Districts [Railroad, Downtown, Siskiyou-Hargadine and Skidmore-Academy] in which to locate an historic-themed, site-specific contemporary piece of artwork.

Branching off from the Hub Sites will be Spoke Sites [approximately 6-12 per district] designated by site markers that will focus on the important places, events or people connected with each specific District. The site markers will contain short narratives with artistic representation of the historic significance of each site.

Railroad District Hub Site
The City of Ashland, by and through its Public Arts Commission, is seeking to commission an artist/artist-led team to design, fabricate and install site-specific artwork in Railroad Park, as the first HUB location in this multi-phased project. Selected Finalists in the competition will be asked to submit design concepts that reflect the historic significance of the Railroad District.

Selection Panel

These design concepts will be reviewed by an independent Selection Panel consisting of art professionals and enthusiasts, residents near the site, and community members.
To apply to serve on the Selection Panel [meeting(s) to be held in early March], please visit the City website  to fill out a brief application (or mail the included application to: 20 East Main St., Ashland, OR 97520   Attn: PAC / Aaron Anderson). Applications may also be e-mailed to
