Oregon Department of Transportation - I-5 bridge repairs begin south of Ashland

Oregon Department of Transportation - I-5 bridge repairs begin south of Ashland

ASHLAND — Repairs begin next week on two Interstate 5 bridges that span Crowson Road south of Ashland. The work requires reducing I-5 traffic to a single lane in each direction.
The $2.5 million rehabilitation project will occur during daylight hours. The work requires a traffic crossover, allowing prime contractor Carter and Company to close one bridge while working on the other. The contractor will set signs, build crossovers and eventually pour new concrete decks on the twin bridges located near the Siskiyou Summit chain up area (milepost 13).

The bridges were part of the original I-5 construction project and date back to the mid-1960s. The decks are old and in poor shape with concrete spalling.

Hydroblasting will remove poor concrete. Hydroblasting utilizes high-pressure water to remove deteriorated concrete, providing an excellent bonding surface for repair material and new coating applications. Unlike jackhammers, hydroblasting does not produce vibrations throughout a structure and therefore does not introduce micro fractures.

During the hydroblasting, Crowson Road will be under flagger control.

This bridge repair work will continue through the end of September.
