Just before 6:00 a.m. this morning, residents in the area of Tolman Creek Road reported seeing smoke in the grass and brush near the Toothpick Trailhead. Firefighters from Ashland Fire & Rescue, JCFD #5, Oregon Department of Forestry and USFS began arriving on scene about 6:30 a.m. The half-acre fire was completely wet-lined by 7:20 a.m. Assistance was received from BLM and Grayback firefighters as well. As firefighters continue to mop up the fire this morning, smoke will still be visible from the Ashland area. The fire is on private lands protected by the Oregon Department of Forestry and is under investigation.
Effective this morning, fire danger has increased to EXTREME and handheld, internal combustion engine equipment use is not permitted during any hours of the day for private citizens. Be sure to check all fire prevention regulations prior to working or recreating.
