Remote Meeting via Zoom
 
1. Call to order: 5:03
 
Attendance: Yamaguchi, Gillis, Simon, Garret, Muse, Cowden, Choudhary, Elson, Jenkins, Williams, DuQuenne (council liaison), Seltzer (staff liaison)
 
Absent: None
 
2. Welcome and introduction Anne Cowden: Cowden gave a brief overview of her background and her interest in serving on this commission.
 
3. Approval of Minutes:
 
Motion: Elson/Williams moved approval of the minutes as presented.  Motion passes.
 
4. Public Input: None
 
5. Interfaith Council
Muse welcomed Judy Voruz representative of the Interfaith Council and invited her to speak about the work of the group.  Voruz explained that the group is an ecumenical group of different faiths from around the valley and they are interested in working with SERJ.  She is new to the group and did not currently have a lot of information.
 
6. City of Medford Commission for Access, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (CADEI).
Muse welcomed members of the commission and invited them to introduce themselves.  Representatives included Rosemary Jernigan, Richard Beall and chair Marta Tarantsey. Tarantsey spoke of the work of CADEI and its recent participation in the RFP (Request for Proposals) process for the City of Medford to secure a consultant for DEI solutions for the City of Medford.  The Kaleidoscope Group was selected, and their report is due this fall. The lead on for the consultant is Tanya Settles.  Kevin Stein is the council liaison to CADEI.
 
Simon asked if CADEI would share the ordinance creating the commission and the goals of the commission.  Seltzer asked for a copy of the RFP.
 
7. Review of draft report to City council.
Simon invited comments from the group about the document.  Following a general discussion, a motion was made.
 
Motion: Simon/Muse SERJ agrees in substance to the draft report with additional edits as noted.  Motion passes.
 
8. Update on SERJ events and how SOU students might be involved with the work of SERJ.
Yamaguchi provide an overview of the work of the subcommittee which includes Gillis and Elson.  Due to time constraints, a full discussion was not possible.  This item will be on the March SERJ agenda.
 
9. Council Liaison Update
Due to time constraints this item was delayed to March.
 
10. Wrap up.
Simon asked Cowden to compile a list of questions to ask of the new City Manager who will attend the March meeting.  The questions will be sent to Seltzer for distribution to the group.  Seltzer will provide a link to the City Manager’s bio.
