WILDFIRE MITIGATION COMMISSION
Friday, December 18, 2015

 I. CALL TO ORDER: 9:45AM
In Attendance: Bruce Moats, Vicky Sturtevant, Ron Parker, Chris Chambers, Doug Kay, Alison Lerch

Bruce moved to approve as amended, Doug 2nd. All in favor.

  1. Action Item Update
    1. CESPP summary and recommendations
      1. Doug has been working with the Mountain Ranch neighborhood rep putting the Firewise Landscaping Brochure the Ashland Food Project and handed 27 with green bags.  Waiting for feedback for an additional 2500 handouts.
    2. Cover letter for Measure 56/Wildfire Hazard Zone Expansion
      1. While this ordinance addresses trees that are considered more fire prone, there are a number of trees that are not affected by this ordinance.  It does not apply to “significant trees, tree of the year, heritage trees”
      2. Trigger: This ordinance does not apply to your property unless you are remodeling over 200ft or building a new house
      3. First sentence should be about “why” this is being done. Our largest and most dangerous fires have occurred outside of the current WHZ
      4. Incorporate the Firewise Ashland Logo –brand it!

    1. Discussion/suggestions for changing
      1. Address “Landscape Tree” term – trees were here before us
      2. Could the homeowner have a time allowance (3 years) to perform all necessary fuels reduction work?
      3. Shrubs spacing of fire-resistant species should not be lessened
      4. Fire resistant trees cannot be touching the house, but do not need the 10 ft clearance from the chimney.
      5. Would love to see a prescribed list of recommended trees/shrubs
    2. This is an opportunity to do some post hoc planning
 
Motion to move forward with the draft ordinance from the 12/22/2015 plus any further comments from the WMC sent to AFR on 12/21 by noon. Bruce 2nd. All in favor.
