The following results are presently all which are available for this particular race. They are sourced from microfilm research conducted of the archives of the local newspapers – the Mail Tribune (Medford) and the Daily Tidings (Ashland). There were photos in the archives for most of the races in the Daily Tidings, but they are not included here as they did not copy well. Additional results will be added should they become available.
Midway through Saturday's 22nd annual Fourth of July Run, Ian Solof and the venerable Ric Sayre were running side by side.
At age 44, Sayre is old enough to be Solof's father. Could he defy Father Time and beat the 26-year-old Solof to the finish line of the Ashland event?
A wicked quarter-mile hill along Eagle Mill Road provided the answer. While Solof bounced up the incline like a sprightly colt, Sayre labored.
Solof went on to win the 6-mile race in 31 minutes and 16 seconds. Hillsboro's Peter Fleming overhauled Sayre to take second in 31:56, while Sayre finished third in 32:09.
Ashland's Robert Julian, Jr., was fourth in 33:27 and Grier Gatlin was fifth in 33:41.
Katie Brandy won the women's portion of the race in 39:40.
"That's a very tough hill but I guess it was a little less tough on me," said Solof, an Ashland High and University of Portland graduate who now serves as an assistant coach with the Portland track team. "The first half of the race is downhill and so that makes it (the hill) even tougher.
"But I have all the respect in the world for Ric Sayre. He went out aggressively. To run like that at his age is really impressive."
Sayre set the course record of 29:22 in 1988.
Solof has had a successful running season. He finished second out of a field of 3,000 runners at the Beat the Bridge 8-kilometer race in Seattle and third at the Fisher's Landing 10K race in Vancouver, Wash., pocketing $200 in the latter event.
But Saturday marked his first victory of the summer in five trips to the starting line.
"This is a great community event and it's fun to come back home and run," said Solof, who won for the second time in three years. "Just having the hometown crowd cheer you on is special.
"I went out very relaxed. I wanted to win but I didn't feel any pressure." Brandy, meanwhile, beat women's runner-up Susan Kahoun of Medford by one minute and 46 seconds. Kahoun was timed in 41:26. Ashland's Rebekah Julian finished third in 41:48, Lisa Rinderknecht of Escondido, Calif., was fourth in 42:02 and 52-year-old Elaine Delsman of Ashland was fifth in 42:34.
All but 27 of the 321 runners who signed up for the race completed it.
