In October of 2005 solar panels were installed on the roof of the pavilion at North Mountain Park just east of the Nature Center.

The solar panels (or PV modules as they are called) collect solar energy, and a utility-interactive inverter converts the DC power from the PV array to standard AC power. The power is then synchronized with the city's electricity. Energy generated by the system is first used within the Nature Center and the surplus power is pushed onto the city's utility wires.

After the initial costs, the solar power system should require few recurring expenses and allow for substantial savings on electricity costs. More importantly, solar energy is both clean and renewable. Unlike most forms of energy, solar systems release no harmful emissions into the atmosphere and they are not dependent upon non-renewable fossil fuels. Solar energy can be created whenever and wherever the sun is shining and can even be produced on cloudy days.
