Controlled Burns Planned for Tuesday, January 14th: Southeast Ashland and Reeder Reservoir

On Tuesday, January 14th several controlled burns are planned for community wildfire safety.
  1. Near Morning Light Drive: Crews will manage a burn to consume piles that could have smoke impacts off Upper Tolman Creek Road above the Green Meadows neighborhood.
  2. Upper Tolman Creek Road: Another controlled burn will be managed which crosses both sides of Tolman Creek Road a few miles beyond the burn on Morning Light Drive. Smoke could impact Upper Tolman Creek Road and homes closest to the burn.
  3. Timberlake Drive: A controlled burn is planned near the junction of Timberlake and Merle Drives. Smoke could be visible from different parts of South Ashland and may impact homes near the burn.
  4. Reeder Reservoir: On public land around Reeder Reservoir, crews with Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest will manage a burn on 70 acres. This controlled burn is not expected to have road or trail impacts.

Smoke could be visible from different parts of the community including Interstate 5. No roads or trails will be impacted. If you live close to a burn location, keep windows closed and if you smell smoke, follow health recommendations on Smokewise Ashland.

Why We Conduct Burns
A recent article in the Ashland Daily Tidings explains more about why we used controlled burns. See 'Fighting Fire with Fire' for details on how much controlled burning has been completed and, how much more we have this spring.

Conditions for burning are good with a weather system that will move smoke away from town.  Controlled burns are a critical part of creating a safer, more resilient landscape and community in the face of increasing fire risk due to climate change and overgrown forests.
