Vote for the 2019 Tree of the Year

Voting for the 2019 Tree of the Year is now open on-line at: https://gis.ashland.or.us/treeofyear2019/.  Paper ballots are also available in the Community Development and Engineering Services Building at 51 Winburn Way.

The Tree Commission holds a “Tree of the Year” contest each year.  Beginning in the fall, Ashlanders nominate candidates for Tree of the Year through an open nomination process, and based on those nominations the Tree Commission selects finalists. This year’s finalists are:

  • 558 Holly Street Ponderosa Pine
In nominating this tree, Peter Finkle noted that the dramatic Ponderosa pine on Holly Street stands out, and was thought by some neighbors to be a Native American trail marker tree. Marker trees were bent in the direction of a frequently visited destination such as a water source, campsite or river crossing. Finkle concluded that the tree was likely not a marker tree as they typically have bent branches pointing the way at only three- to six-feet above ground while the lowest bent branch on the Holly Street pine is more than ten-feet above ground. He suggests that the tree is nonetheless a case of unusual artwork by Mother Nature.

  • 965 Bellview Avenue Giant Sequoia
In nominating this tree, which they call “Mamma Bella, a majestic Giant Sequoia”, Kim Jensen and Rosanna Ferraro-Jensen note, “words are not enough to describe her majestic beauty, and “hobbit-like” magical base of her trunk.

  • 243 Fourth Street Cork Oak
Claudia Law nominated the Cork oak, noting that it is an amazing tree that needs protection. Corks oaks commonly live more than 200 years, and are the primary source for wine corks, cork flooring and the cork cores for cricket balls. When property done, cork can be harvested up to 12 times over the life of a Cork oak.

  • Scenic Drive and Church Street Oak
L.A. Maddox nominated the “Big Oak” at Scenic Drive and Church Street, explaining that it is in shadow for three hours a day and provides a place to sit when one walks up Church Street.

Voting will continue through April 3rd, and the winner will be announced at the Arbor Day Tree Planting at Oak Knoll Golf Course at 12:00 noon on April 5th.
