City of Ashland, Oregon / City Recorder / Documents / Proclamations / Year 2006 / First Nations Day
First Nations Day
PROCLAMATION
| • |
For thousands of years the health and beauty of southwest Oregon was maintained by the wise stewardship of the Indians; and |
| • |
The Indians were forcibly removed from their homeland 150 years ago, in 1856; and |
| • |
A spiritual ceremony honoring this Sesquicentennial with the blessing of a sculpture dedicated to the First Nations of Southwest Oregon will take place on Saturday, September 30th, from 3 to 4 p.m.; and |
| • |
This will represent the beginning of a healing process between tribal and non-tribal people. |
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John W. Morrison, Mayor of Ashland, do hereby proclaim September 30th as
First Nation's Day
and encourage all Ashland citizens to honor and respect the gifts our Indian relatives have given to us in the past, and with our help, will give in the future.
Dated this 19th day of September, 2006
Barbara Christensen, City Recorder John W. Morrison, Mayor
