World Environment
PROCLAMATION
| • |
World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to raise environmental awareness and to encourage action to protect the environment. |
| • |
World Environment Day, commemorated each year on June 5th, is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action. |
| • |
A primary purpose of World Environment Day is to give a human face to environmental issues; empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development; and promote an understanding that communities are pivotal to changing attitudes toward environmental issues. |
| • |
It is in the interests of the citizens of all communities in all nations to encourage environmentally sustainable development policies that allow for the preservation and renewal of natural resources. |
| • |
The World Environment Day theme selected for 2005 is "Green Cities" and the slogan is "Plan for the Planet!" |
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John W. Morrison, Mayor of Ashland, hereby proclaim June 5 - 11, 2005 as
WORLD ENVIRONMENT WEEK
and urge all citizens to support efforts to raise environmental awareness.
Dated this 7th day of June, 2005.
Barbara Christensen, City Recorder John W. Morrison, Mayor
