The "Pre-Public Art Study Group" prepared a policy
statement for council consideration, which supports the formation of an informal
Public Art Study Group. |
| Recommendation: |
Staff recommends the council adopt the following
public art policy statement. |
| Fiscal Impact: |
There is no fiscal impact anticipated with the adoption
of the policy. Programs developed subsequent to the policy may have fiscal
impacts, which would have to be analyzed after the programs are identified.

| Background: |
On January 16th the council held a study session
where members of the "Pre-Public Art Study Group" made a presentation advocating
the development of a public art policy for the City of Ashland. They suggested
that an informal study group be formed to help identify the types of issues
that would need to be considered in developing a public art policy for the
city. Some of the issues to be considered would be the type of committee
(non-profit group or city commission), funding sources, relationship to the
government and short/long term goals. Councilors Morrison, Hearn and Reid
agreed to participate with this informal committee to help develop a formal
policy for future consideration by the council.
In addition the group requested that the council consider adopting
a formal statement expressing support of the study group and the commitment
to the development of a public art policy.
Public Art Statement:
The city council recognizes the value and importance of public art
in the community and is committed to the development of a public art
policy.
To this end, the council agrees to participate with an informal study
group to research and develop possible alternatives for such a policy and
to collaborate with the study group in the writing and implementation of
a final proposed policy. |
