City of Ashland, Oregon / Fire / Fire Chief

Chief Karns
Chief John Karns

Dear Residents and Visitors of Ashland:

On behalf of Ashland Fire and Rescue I would like to welcome you to our department’s web site. We want this resource to provide Ashland’s citizens and visitors with information they will find helpful. I’m proud to lead such a committed group of men and women who care deeply about serving this community. Whether it is emergency medical services, fire suppression and prevention, emergency preparedness, managing our watershed, or simply installing a child safety seat, our goal is to provide you with excellent service.

I am pleased to state that the success of our Firewise Communities Program has exceeded our expectations. This speaks well of our community and the citizens desire to get involved and claim ownership in their own safety and preparedness for a wildfire. I do encourage you to get involved in this important program by clicking on the link to the left. You will be better prepared if you do. Our CERT program is the model of Southern Oregon. Partnering with Southern Oregon University, we graduated the largest number of students from a training class we’ve had. The capabilities of our CERT program are expanding and their role in the community’s response to large events and emergencies is growing.

Ashland Fire & Rescue will be enhancing our outreach for emergency preparedness. There will be new approaches to an existing message. Citizens, workers, businesses, and all organizations need to evaluate where they are at in terms of emergency preparedness, make a plan, and execute that plan. We are here to help you with that and guide you through the process. The motto of Ashland Fire & Rescue is “Help Us Help You”.

As the fire season begins, we ask that you to be mindful of where you live and the fire hazards that Ashland faces. Ashland is a very special community and it requires the vigilance of all who live, work, and visit here to ensure our safety from fire.

Please remember to use your fire department as a resource. We are available to provide a wide variety of information and preparedness tips that can help make a difference before, during, and after an emergency. Please spend some time on our web site. I believe you will find it useful and informative.

Thank you for your interest in Ashland Fire and Rescue and stay safe.

Sincerely,

John Karns
