Acceptable appliances include chimineas with a spark arrestor on the flue and a screen over the fire box or an outdoor fire place which has a solid top with side loading doors/screens for wood. A spark arrestor can be added to a chimney providing it meets the following criteria based on the Oregon Structural Specialty Code:
The screen is made of 19 gage galvanized steel or 24 gage stainless steel.
Screen grid is no greater than ½” openings and no less than 3/8” opening.
Unacceptable fireplaces include those for which the lid or screen must be removed in order to place wood on the fire or those which have no lid or screen. The photos here are examples of unapproved fireplaces.
