Walk to School
PROCLAMATION
Now that school is in session, more children are walking to and from
neighborhood schools, many of them during the busiest time of the day.
It is vital to address the safety of children by making walking safer
in our community.
Parents and caregivers should teach children about pedestrian safety
and become aware of the difficulties and dangers that children face on their
trip to school each day.
Community leaders and parents should determine the "walkability" of
their community.
Residents can make a list of suggestions for changes and improvements
to increase the safety of children who are walking in our communities.
Children, parents and community leaders are joining together nationwide
to walk to school and evaluate pedestrian safety in their community.
Now, therefore, the City Council and Mayor, on behalf of the citizens of
Ashland, hereby proclaim October 8, 2003, as
"WALK OUR CHILDREN TO SCHOOL DAY"
and encourage everyone to consider the safety of pedestrians today and every
day.
Dated this 7th day of October, 2003.
Barbara Christensen, City Recorder
Alan DeBoer, Mayor
