Ashland All Schools Sustainability Competition!
Sponsored by the Ashland Conservation Commission and City of Ashland
All entries due by 5pm on May 9, 2014.
Please email Submission Forms to Adam Hanks (adam@ashland.or.us) or drop off printed forms at the Community Development Building at 51 Winburn Way (across from the entrance to Lithia Park)
Competition #1: Create a performance about sustainability for the “Green” Green Show with OSF. Work individually or join with your classmates to display artwork or put on a 5-minute play, dance, song or performance art addressing sustainability. The winning individual or group will perform at a special production.
Some ideas:
Performance art Singing or poetry
Musical instruments Dancing
Drawing and/or painting Video
Additional information:
Artwork and/or performances will be judged during the week of May 12-16th by a panel of judges from city government and the general population. Up to 3 awards will be given. Grade/age will be taken into consideration.
Awards:
Winners will perform at a special “Green” Green show (date TBA).
Competition #2: Make your school more sustainable. Describe a project that saves energy, water, and/or resources. Projects implemented in the last year are eligible, as are brand new ones.
Some ideas:
Evaluate your school’s carbon footprint and identify target areas for reducing it
Band with other students to reduce household carbon footprints
Take the Green Schools Pledge at greenschools.net
Start a Sustainability Club and develop goals for next year
Reduce electricity use/switch to renewable energy
Increase alternative transportation (walk, bike, skateboard, carpool)
Conserve water and/or resources (eg. reduce waste, increase recycling)
Switch to locally-sourced food
Other actions (get creative!) that save resources, energy, and money
Additional information:
Projects will be judged during the week of May 12-16th by the Conservation Commission. Up to 3 awards will be given. Grade/age will be taken into consideration.
Some criteria to be considered include:
Number of students involved (including those who participate in any sort of effort, such as biking to school or collecting recycling)
Creativity/fun
Actual energy and/or resources conserved
Potential energy and/or resources conserved (if the project is a plan, but has not been implemented)
Educational value (if the project serves to teach others about sustainability or specific issues related to sustainability)
Additional benefits (such as better health, cleaner air/water, social equity, monetary savings, etc.)
Note: Not all criteria need to be addressed by all projects.
Awards:
Winners will receive an ice cream party for up to 35 students. Awards will be announced at a special production of the “Green” Green Show (date TBA) and also at a school function.
