2011 Junior Conservationist of the Year

Junior Conservationist of the Year
Sophie Javna 2011

Sophia Joavna has been a "mover and a shaker" on the Ashland High School campus.  She has been instrumentally involved in the Ashland Food Project and coordinmates student volunteers.

She started an Outdoor Club to encourage hiking locally to save gas, including hiking Table Rocks, Cascade Siskiyou National Monument, snow shoeing at Crater Lake National Park and joining together to help out the Parks Department at Lithia Park.

Sophia started a Superheros for Sustainability Club which focuses on getting more locally produced food in the High School's cafeteria.  They encourage students to eat on campus, find volunterrs to help prep local foods, and the cafeteria is now working to slowly introduce local produce into the school.

She has pushed the group to start gardeing on campus at the old Wilderness Charter School garden.  She helps to maintain sustainable purchasing, reduce chemical and toxin use, increased measures in waste reduction, while assisting in education on sustainability.
