The City Manager’s Report showcases current events facing the City externally and internally since the last Council meeting, while highlighting City accomplishments.
City Manager Job Description
Staff will return at the next Business Meeting (Feb 16) to finalize the City Manager Job Description and provide a recommendation to the Council on a Professional Recruitment Firm to engage in the search. The City received six proposals to provide Professional Recruitment Services, and staff will refine the list and request council approval to start work on the Recruitment.
Interim Fire Chief Recruitment Update
Staff will also return at the next Business Meeting with a recommendation to fill the Interim Fire Chief position. Since Council's approval to utilize the Western Fire Chiefs Association to assist in the recruitment and vetting of an experienced Fire Chief to bring management capacity and support to Acting Chief Sartain, we have reviewed a number of resumes, had panel zoom interviews with two but were not able to complete the negotiations with the panel's preferred candidate.
As was considered in prior Council discussions, given the timing and current needs of the Department, staff has returned to developing a support structure around Acting Chief Sartain that would allow him to successfully function as the City's Interim Fire Chief for a six to nine month timeframe. This plan includes internal and external temporary assignment in key support functions within the Fire Department Administration, giving Chief Sartain the tools he needs to lead the Department as well as extend leadership and management training opportunities for our excellent Fire Operations command staff. A complete plan and proposal will be provided for Council review and decision at the February 16 Business Meeting
Oregon Association of Municipal Recorders Region V Director
The Oregon Association of Municipal Recorders (OAMR) recently installed Ashland City Recorder Melissa Huhtala as the 2020-2022 OAMR Region V Director. Melissa received the oath of office at the association’s Annual Business Meeting held virtually, on September 25, 2020.
OAMR is a professional organization dedicated to promoting governmental relationships and providing educational and training opportunities for over 200 Oregon City Recorders statewide.
Melissa has been an active member of OAMR since 2011. She has served on numerous OAMR committees, including Conference Committee, Internet Committee, Nominating Committee, and Mentoring Committee.
This will be Melissa’s second term as Region V Director.
