HATE SPEECH INCIDENT NEAR RAIL ROAD PARK
On Friday evening, June 24, 2016, at approximately 7:30 p.m. a member of the Ashland community was walking her dog in the area of Rail Road Park. This female, who is a member of the African American community, heard a man on a bike say something to her. The man then repeated his statement, claiming that there is a law in Oregon that would allow him to kill her because she is African American. The man also claimed that the Ku Klux Klan is still active in Ashland.
This disturbing incident was reported to the Ashland Police Department the next day. The APD believes that it has identified the man responsible. The APD has consulted with the Jackson County District Attorney’s office on this matter. While the Jackson County District Attorney joins the APD and the entire Ashland community in decrying this hateful speech, the determination has been made that there was no crime committed.
Under Oregon law, all members of society are equal, and there is no provision that allows for violence or victimization of any member of the community at the hands of another.
The APD would like to encourage all members of the community to report suspicious behavior. The APD will take all enforcement steps available to hold suspects accountable under Oregon statutes.
