The City of Ashland Historic Commission invites the Ashland community to the rededication of the statue “Pioneer Mike” on the Plaza on Saturday, July 2 at 3:00 p.m.
“Pioneer Mike” and the Carter Memorial Fountain were installed on the Plaza in 1910 as a gift to the City of Ashland from the children of H.H. and H.B. Carter. The Carters and their children established the Bank of Ashland, the city’s first financial institution in 1884.
The statue has been vandalized several times over the years, most recently in October of 2014. The City Council voted to allocate $50,000 to re-cast the statue rather than trying to repair the original and fragile cast zinc. The City also restored the fountain base, re-worked the plumbing and addressed rust damage.
“As the newest member of the City of Ashland Historic Commission and a curator for the Carter family, I am so pleased to be involved in this dedication,” says Taylor Leonard of Ashland. “Members of the Carter family will be on hand for the dedication.”
