Restoration of the Carter Memorial (drinking) Fountain is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 9th, as part of the Pioneer Mike statue restoration project. The restoration work will include removing all the paint from the fountain, repairing some damaged areas and repainting the exterior surfaces. The interior portion of the fountain will also be treated with a rust converter to stop any corrosion and the internal plumbing will be replaced. The fountain will be surrounded by scaffolding and protected with plastic during the restoration work. Restoration work is expected to be completed within two weeks of the start of the project.
The Pioneer Mike statue was vandalized in October of 2014 and had to be removed from the top of the fountain. An inspection of the vandalism revealed that in his current condition, Mike could not be repaired in a manner that would be safe for long term outdoor display. The Pioneer Mike statue is a contributing structure to the historic downtown area and is currently being recast in bronze. Itís expected that the recast Pioneer Mike statue will be completed and ready for display sometime in late June. The Carter Memorial Fountain, upon which Pioneer Mike has stood for most of the past 100 years is due for restoration.
