Council to consider second Gateway art concept

The City Council, at its January 5th meeting, agreed to ask artist Susan Zoccola to create a second concept for the Gateway island on Siskiyou Boulevard between the Ashland Library and Fire Station 1.  The Council will then consider that second concept in addition to the "Gather" sculpture proposed by Zoccola.

Zoccola was one of three artists chosen by the Public Arts Commission to develop a concept for a major piece of public art in the Gateway Island.  An independent selection panel then unanimously selected Zoccola's "Gather" as the artwork for the Gateway island.  (Click on this link to see the "Gather" proposal)

Public Arts Commission chair Margaret Garrington presented the recommendation to the City Council at the Council's January 5th meeting, along with a recommendation that the Council award a contract to Zoccola for final design, engineering and installation of "Gather."  (To see Ms. Garrington's presentation to the Council, follow this link. The presentation begins about 31 minutes into the video.)

The Council, while acknowledging the quality and integrity of Zoccola's work, voted 4-2 to request that she develop a second Gateway island concept.  When that's done, the Council will choose between Gather and the second concept.  It is not known at this time when that second concept will be presented to the Council.
