Potential Threats Against Ashland High School Investigated,APD Press Release

ASHLAND POLICE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE

October 1, 2015

Potential Threats Against Ashland High School Investigated

On October 1, 2015 at 1:00 p.m. the Ashland Police Department received an email from a former resident of Ashland. The email included screenshots of another former Ashland High School studentís Facebook page in which a firearm was displayed along with two statements that were somewhat threatening and alarming. These statements alluded to this manís desire to exact revenge on some people in his life. Given the events in Roseburg today, and the on-going threat of school violence, this is a situation which the police department and the school administration take quite seriously.

APD immediately contacted Ashland High School and it was determined that the man is no longer a student at the school. APD stayed in touch with the administration of the high school, and it was mutually agreed that the high schoolís Homecoming Parade should be cancelled. APD was able to determine that the image shown was a stock image available on the internet, and not a picture taken by the person that posted it.

The APD, along with the administration of the school, also decided that while the situation did not represent a direct, articulated threat, it raised enough concern that APD officers should be present on the school campus as the school day ended. The students were held an extra ten minutes to ensure their safety, and were then released for the day.

The APD and the AHS administration will always take every step possible to ensure the safety of the students and staff of the high school, and all other Ashland schools.

APD has tentatively identified the man who posted the images and statements and APD detectives are working on locating him.

The Homecoming Parade will be rescheduled, and all other school events are proceeding as planned.
