Chemical Spill in Ashland Creek

A paving project in the parking lot of the Ashland Christian Fellowship Church at 50 West Hersey Street has resulted in a chemical spill into Ashland Creek.  The Ashland Police Department has issued a “stop work” order to Esselstrom Construction, the contractor hired by the Church to pave the lot.
A nearby resident reported the smell of diesel and brown film in his irrigation ditch along Ashland Creek. Ashland Fire and Rescue responded to the call.  Mr. Esselstrom stated they accidently spilled the product they were using and washed it down the storm drain with water.  The property representative stated a spill also occurred on Sunday. Water samples were collected and have been sent to a laboratory for testing.
The City requested assistance and direction from the Oregon DEQ Emergency Response System on the appropriate cleanup response.  DEQ has instructed the contractor to steam clean the drain and pump.
