Fire Season Ends in Ashland

Rains have prompted the Oregon Department of Forestry to declare the end to the 2014 fire season today, Wednesday, October 15, 2014.

For residents in the City of Ashland, this means that fire season related restrictions have been lifted from all private and publicly owned lands within the city limits. The following restrictions remain in effect year-round in the city limits of Ashland:
  • Fireworks are prohibited throughout the year in the City of Ashland.
  • Backyard recreational fire pits are only permitted in raised, side loading fire pits while burning natural dry wood. If the device has a chimney, it is required to have a spark arrestor. Recreational fires are not permitted on the ground or in open fire pits, except in Lithia Park or approved community fire pits.
  • Outdoor debris burning is prohibited inside the City of Ashland unless a permit is obtained. Burn permits will only be issued through October 29 for the following:
    • Piles resulting from wildfire fuels reduction effort in the Wildfire Hazard Zone only.
    • Noxious weeds, as defined by the state of Oregon, throughout the city when approved.
    • Burn permits for City of Ashland residents may be requested by calling 482-2770 between 8:00am and 5:00pm. If you reach a recording, press 2 for the Battalion Chief’s office. An inspection is required prior to the issuance of the permit. More information regarding current burning rules can be found at www.ashland.or.us/burning.
Rather than choosing to burn, residents are encouraged to use alternatives to burning such as chipping, composting or transporting to a biomass facility. Yard trimmings and clippings are not permitted to be burned. Leaves, grass, garbage, construction debris, stumps or any materials creating obnoxious odors are not permitted.

Now is the time to plan for next year’s fire season. For tips on preparing your home for a wildfire, visit the City of Ashland’s website at www.ashland.or.us/firewise or contact Ashland Fire & Rescue at 482-2770.
