The Ashland Parks and Recreation Commission has selected Michael A. Black to head up Ashland Parks & Recreation, City of Ashland.
Following a thorough process that included a professional recruiter spearheading a national search, the five Parks Commission members, a City Councilor, two City department heads and a representative from a Eugene municipal agency, Michael Black was chosen to lead the department.
Black’s career in local government administration reveals a track record of strong leadership and planning in the areas of parks and community development and active transportation. Most recently Black served on the executive team for the City of Grants Pass, OR, where he worked as the Parks and Community Development Director. Earlier, he directed the Community and Economic Development Department for the City of Cottonwood Heights, UT.
Black has served on a variety of boards and commissions, including the Rogue River Greenway Foundation, the Josephine Parks Foundation and the Oregon City Planning Directors’ Association.“It’s a privilege to be selected to lead this great organization in a community that is so passionate about parks, trails and recreation programs,” stated Black. “I’m looking forward to getting started with the Parks Commission and Parks staff and I’m eager to tackle the challenges ahead.”
The Ashland Parks and Recreation Commission anticipates appointing Black at a special meeting on Monday, August 18, at 7 p.m. in the Parks office, 340 S. Pioneer Street (upper Lithia Park). The meeting will be open to the public.
