Ashland Receives Bicycle Friendly Community Gold Award

Ashland’s Bicycle Friendly Community status has been upgraded from Bronze to Gold by The League of American Bicyclists.  A panel of national bicycle experts reviewed and scored our recent application which was judged in five categories, often referred to as the Five E’s:  Engineering, Education, Encouragement, Enforcement, and Evaluation and Planning.
The League was impressed with many aspects of Ashland’s effort to build a bicycle-friendly community, notably:
  • The updated Multi-Modal Transportation System Plan, Comprehensive Plan and Land Use Ordinances which focus on multi-modal equity, and the City’s efforts to make these standards a reality on the ground.
  • The recently submitted Ashland Watershed Master Trails Plan.
  • The ongoing Bicycle Safety Education programs for elementary students, adults and seniors demonstrating the importance placed on educating cyclists both young and old.
  • The many local bicycle friendly businesses who actively promote “bike to work” for employees which reduces in-town vehicle trips and the need for increased parking.
  • The thriving bike culture that includes events such as Car Free Day, Ashland Bike Swap, and bicycle races, many of which raise funds for ongoing trail maintenance.
  • The thriving partnership between the City, bike advocates, League Cycling Instructors and the broader community which serves as a real engine towards change.

Ashland is one of only 18 cities in the nation to receive the Gold level status and one of 10 cities in Oregon to be designated a Bicycle Friendly Community.  Oregon ranks third overall in the nation for Bicycle Friendly Communities.
