Ashland Firewise Clean-Up Day Event Surpasses All Expectations

As part of Firewise Week in Ashland, the first annual Firewise Clean-Up Day event was held on Sunday, May 6th, 2012 from 9-4, at the Lincoln School parking lot. This event was an opportunity for Ashland residents to make their yards Firewise by removing potential wildfire fuel and dispose of yard debris free of charge.

This event was a project of the Ashland Firewise Commission, and a partnership with Recology Ashland Sanitary Service. Volunteers were from the Firewise Commission, Ashland CERT, and Master Recyclers.

The expectation by event organizers was to fill approximately 2 to 4 of the 25-yard debris bins provided by Recology, with an expected number of vehicles of 50 or less.

By the end of the day, over 260 vehicles dropped off debris. Over 20 25-yard bins were filled. The Clean-Up Day event collected over 525 yards of cubic material, which equates to approximately 65 tons of material. All of the material will be composted locally.

To accommodate the unanticipated demand for service, Recology Ashland Sanitary increased their number of drivers and transported full bins of yard debris to Valley View Transfer Station throughout the day. For this community event, Recology Ashland Sanitary Service donated approximately $1300 in disposal costs, 34 man hours of labor, much of which was overtime, over 300 truck miles, and approximately $1200 in fuel.

It is with great appreciation to Recology Ashland Sanitary Service, the event volunteers, and the Firewise Commission, that Ashland Fire & Rescue was able to successfully accomplish the first annual Firewise Clean-Up Day. Ashland Fire & Rescue appreciates the opportunity to encourage all residents of Ashland to be Firewise,to  remove potential fuel from a wildfire before fire season, and to support the Ashland Firewise Communities program.

Based on the overwhelming popularity of the event, Ashland Fire & Rescue and Recology Ashland Sanitary Service will be conducting Firewise Clean-Up Day in the future as part of Firewise Week, the first week of May, 2013.
