Global warming is one of the most pressing ecological problems facing our community and society, but we have the power to turn it around. Ashland’s City Council and Conservation Commission will host Secretary of State Bill Bradbury in a free, live presentation of Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” on December 3, 2006 from 2 – 5 p.m. at the Mountain Avenue Theater of Ashland High School. Attendees are encouraged to walk, bike or carpool to minimize our carbon impact.
Bradbury will present Gore’s power point slide show and take public questions. City staff, officials, organizations, the Ashland School District and SOU’s environmental group will be on hand to provide insight on ways to reduce and offset carbon emissions. After the main presentation, attendees will be able to speak with these groups, obtain resources and get involved at information tables.
" I hope this event will begin a discussion of how to produce a Sustainability Plan that highlights carbon neutral options in each of the local programs in the community. We can all make simple choices in our lives that have a big impact on our individual and thus our community carbon footprint,” says Councilor Kate Jackson, who arranged the visit
The City of Ashland has committed to the Cities for Climate Protection and the US Mayor’s Climate Protection Agreement, which call for reducing and mitigating carbon impact. Residents and businesses can take advantage of many conservation and clean energy programs including free building assessments, purchasing renewable energy credits reduced bus fares and cash rebates for efficient appliances, lighting and solar. “Ashland is seen as a model for our conservation programs, yet there is more we can do. We have high success and involvement but are always working towards wider education, increased participation and program innovation,” says Dick Wanderscheid, Director of Electric Utilities.
Bradbury completed a training with former Vice President Al Gore to prepare for presentations around Oregon. He took part in an intensive tutorial on global warming with Gore and a team of experts and received technical training to present Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” Power point slide show. “Bill is an outstanding example of the millions of Americans who have been energized by the call to action on the climate crisis,” said Gore. “We are so pleased that he has made a serious commitment to this challenge to become part of this unprecedented grassroots effort.”
Global Warming may be an inconvenient truth, but City and regional programs make solutions close at hand. Bradbury’s presentation will motivate us to take our commitment to the next level and shed light on positive opportunities, building hope for the future.
