Discussion of Permanent Placement of the Sculpture "Gift"

Bussell reviewed the options:  (a.) leave the sculpture in its present location and expand the current pedestal, (b.) remove the sculpture and current pedestal and construct a new pedestal in its current location, (c.) remove the sculpture and relocate it in the flat area near the bottom of the stairs.  There had been a previous vote in favor of option (c.).  City staff member Mike Morrison had previously warned that there is the possibility of damaging the sculpture if it is moved.  All options must be approved by the Parks Commission.

Jim Slate recommended constructing a new pedestal with the correct proportions and color to fit the sculpture.  Constructing a new pedestal would take about one week.  The height should be raised 6 inches and it should go approximately 2 feet into the ground.  The top of the pedestal will need to vary in height to accommodate the irregularity of the stone.  A new plaque combining information from the current two plaques could be recessed into the concrete surface.  Concrete sealer could help retain the color.  The commission should check to see what is below ground in any new location.

Bussell made the motion to remove the sculpture "Gift" from its present locationand place it in storage, seek approval from the Parks Commission for relocation to the area near the foot of the Calle Staircase and construct a new pedestal.  The commission would seek new proposals for a rotating sculpture for the pedestal at the top of the stairs. Seconded by Friend. Unanimous vote of approval.

Bussell will contact Mike Morrison for removal of sculpture so it can be placed in storage.  The commission will draw up a plan of the proposed pedestal and present it to the Parks Commission.

Meeting adjourned at 9:15am.
