PAC regular meeting
October 21, 2005
present: Longshore, Gay, Pugh, Markell, Benson, Bayard
absent: Wilkerson, Seltzer, Jackson
guest: Susan Springer
Minutes of September approved
Benson called the meeting to order at 8:15
Calle Phase I: Sue Springer gave an update on Calle Overlook mosaic installation. The signature tile design has been submitted to the Parks Commission. Volunteers still welcome to help with installation. PAC set dedication date as Nov 4, at 3 pm. Calle committee to plan event with Ann Seltzer.
Calle Phase II: Artist Steve Jensen to deliver sculptures in November. Parks Commission has yet to approve Krigel plaque. Installation of sculpture requires simple welding. Once we can move forward with those items, we can plan another dedication.
McGee Memorial: Letters to announce results have been sent to artists who submitted designs. Longshore and Markell to present results as information to the Historic Commission on November 2 and to the City Council on November 15 for final approval.
Discussion ensued regarding the voting process on approving (or not) the recommendations of the selection panel. The general consensus was that the PAC looks at the selection process to assure it follows the guidelines set out, and that no unusual circumstances have arisen that would hamper a recommendation to the City or to Parks. This is not an opportunity to insert personal preferences. These guidelines need to be more clearly spelled out in Policies and Procedures. Gay offered to compose draft of such guidelines. Bayard to supply working documents for sample text.
New business: Sharon Hull of Boudashery is going out of business and wants to donate sculpture to the City. Discussion again centered around how to not make personal choices, but to follow a policy, in addition to starting a dialogue with the City about maintaining art collection. Gay again offered to review draft of Gift Acquisitions. Bayard to forward material that has already been drafted.
No further business. Meeting adjourned.
